You don’t have to follow a legal process to start using a new name or part change a name by adding or removing names and hyphens, or changing spelling.
But you will almost certainly need a ‘Deed Poll’ (a legal document) to apply for or to change official documents like your passport or driving licence.
There are extra rules about changing a child’s name: for one thing, everyone with parental responsibility for the child must consent to the change. If your child is 16 years of age or over (or approaching their 16th birthday), they can apply for their own Deed Poll for which parental consent is not required.
However, there are certain situations in which a child’s name can be changed without the consent of the father.
